Sunday Evening Smackdown Review.
Written By Patrick O'malley.
WWE manages to get fans talking with new Wrestlemania direction.
Intro.
No guys. You're eyes aren't deceiving you. I'm writing the Smackdown review on a Sunday evening, this is due to timing, so I could work in my day job, and get some things finalised. I've got big plans for the blog going as this year continues, so planning is key.
Superstars Seen Showing Up.
Jade Cargill. Drew Mcintyre, and, Rhea Ripley were seen showing up, whilst Cody was seen sat in the stands, sitting in a seat that he probably didn't have to pay for.
Randy Orton Segment.
The show kicked off, with Randy Orton wearing a new piece of hideous Merchandise, that screamed take my money, and where's my bank card. He opened up about how this would be his twentieth Mania, and I have to admit that this made me feel old. I was sixteen when Randy took part in his first Mania. I'm 39 now. Having Randy win the Elimination Chamber makes a lot of sense from a booking perspective even if fans may not want it. Randy spent more than 16 months on the sidelines with a back injury, that nearly put an end to the vipers career. Trick Williams then put a stop to proceedings, but before he could say the words Lemon Pepper Steppers, Randy shut him down with an RKO. I liked this.
Carmelo Hayes vs Dr Hijo Del Wagner Jnr United States Open Challenge.
I liked this. I have to admit that i'm not the biggest fan of AAA because i'm more of a CMLL guy, but this was a fun Match, and a good bit of business. Carmelo retained his belt.
Ilja Dragonov Segment.
Ilja Dragonov. Kit Wilson, and. The Miz were all in a segment together. I smell a threeway coming on.
Nick Aldis Segment.
Damien Priest is now in a Tag Team With R Truth, who looks great with a shaved head, and. Drew Mcintyre is doing Nick Aldis's head in. Sounds like a standard Friday Night for the Smackdown general manager. He reminds of a non controversial version of Rodney Dangerfield, because he gets no respect.
Irrestible Forces Tag Team Championship Celebration And Flair And Bliss vs Giulia and Kiana James.
Ididn't like either of these moments. The Celebration segment felt like booking from the He Who Shall Not Be Named play book. The dialogue that was exchanged from the start, and through to the Flair and. Bliss, and Giulia and Kiana all felt forced, and unbelievable From the concept to the end. This was badly scripted garbage. And the Flair and Bliss vs Giulia and Kiana James Match felt the wrath of the earlier segment, because the Match failed to get out of 1st gear. Flair and Bliss got the win.
JellyRoll Is Coming Back To Friday Nights.
JellyRoll is coming back to Friday Night Smackdown next week, to see his friend Randy Orton. I'm just going to say this. JellyRoll has seen a little bit of controversy over the past week thanks to his old friend Ryan Upchurch. Now I don't know all the details, but what I can gather, this sounds like a smear campaign. I'm on my man Jelly's side.
Sami Zayn Segments.
I'm starting to like what WWE are doing with Sami Zayn. His decent into a unhinged lunatic says that a heel turn is on the horizon. This interactions with Randy Orton, and Cody Rhodes are a post Mania tease to keep your eyes on.
Tag Team Turmoil.
R Truth. And. Damien Priest, beat. The Motorcity Machine Gunns. Los Garza. Fraxiom, and. The Wyatt sic. in what was a fun TV Match. I'm not a big fan of these type of TV Match stips, but this one was good.
Jade Cargill And Rhea Ripley Segment.
I loved this. It has been reported by multiple Pro Wrestling Media outlets this week that Rhea, and. Jade didn't like each other, and the commentary team of Michael Cole, and. Wade Barrett played into this, and it worked. You could tell that both ladies were holding back so that they could do business, and this made for some fantastic TV. I still think this Match could be a misfire, but the ladies were excellent here.
Johnny Gargano Segment.
Johnny Gargano, is going back to his old gimmick. Johnny wrestling, it's just a shame that Oba Femi then murdered him. Oh well I guess.
Danhausen Segment.
Danhausen being coached by The Miz. Hah i'm laughing already. Now can someone get Danhausen that blimp that he wants, because that would be very nice, very blimpy.
Cody Rhodes vs Drew Mcintyre WWE Championship.
This was a plodding, and lofi affair, that just felt like it was just going through the motions. The in ring work was decent, but it also felt like a safe bet being played out on TV, as imitation became the best form of flattery. Cody got the win, and is now a three time WWE Champion. My thoughts on his booking decision is simple. I liked the idea of Drew as WWE Champion, and giving him those moments as Champion on the recent UK/EUROPEAN Tour was a nice moment that needed to savoured, but what came next was a far cry from what was promised. His Match with Sami Zayn at the Royal Rumble failed to get over with fans, whilst the lack of care, just catered to WWE's continuing thread of there bad rapor with fans. So getting the belt away from Drew does make sense. Cody vs Randy is something that we haven't seen under HHH's eyes, and I have to admit it, this looks very intriguing. The Match wasn't for me.
Overview of Friday Night Smackdown.
I liked elements of this show, whilst other moments just made me either question my life choices or not get excited for Mania. This weeks Friday Night Smackdown is good, but some fans might see it as uneven.
This weeks Friday Night Smackdown is a low 7/10.
